From Barcelona to Bangsar: Mercat
Tapas, croquetas, paella and mercat are some of my favorite spanish words. They create a world of colourful ingredients and flavourful dishes, infused with that Mediterranean touch that can lift the sadness from your heart in one bite and bring contentment to the palate… and stomach.
The latest addition to the trendy jalan telawi in Bangsar is Mercat – ‘market’ in spanish – a refreshing spanish owned venue that showcases scrumptious traditional Catalan dishes (northern part of Spain) in a sleek and friendly atmosphere. The tantalising smells will lure you inside where the the semi-open kitchen allows for a sneak peak on the chefs’ creations. Lift your chin and try to spot the sagrada familia and other landmarks on the arty Barcelona mural – order some tapas and relax; you are in Spain.
If you are not familiar with spanish food and tapas, follow our recommendations for a truly successful spanish evening. Just like dim sum meals, tapas are best enjoyed shared amongst friends, in the middle of the table where everyone can grab some. Make sure you order some croquetas (dough mixed with ham or chicken, fried), have a try at the uber typical Pan con tomato (bread with grated tomato and garlic), go for the revisited patatas bravas to blow your mind, and finally you MUST order the arroz negro (paella with black rice) for a taste of rice perfumed with squid ink. Should you still have some space left, indulge on the creme catalane; a kind of creme brûlée, spanish style. Few beers to go with that, or, should you prefer wine, you can bring your own (cork fees apply).
