Strato, located on top of Claret – the chic ambient wine bar at sky high level– strikes by its homey feeling, mixing mediterranean tiled tables with open kitchen and stunning view of KLCC. A brigade of local chefs under the command of chef Christian Bauer execute authentic italian dishes with a twist; potato gnocchi with shaved foie gras, Waggyu beef ravioli with sage butter, a tantalising list of freshly made pizzas and of course beautiful desserts.

The menu also puts under the spotlight the rich piemontese cuisine with a wine pairing dinner, and offers a scrumptious set lunch menu. Available every day of the week for a mere RM50+ for 2 courses, or RM65+ for 3 courses inclusive of tea or coffee, the set menu changes every month – giving us one more excuse to come back and try each new variations.

The august proposition is not to be missed, with exquisite unconventional dishes mastered to perfection. To start with, the elegant calamari on its bed of radicchio melts in the mouth, while the herb fried breadcrumbs and delicately cooked potatoes add more texture to the bouchee, all this liven up by chilli flakes – heaven. Amongst the three mains on offer, my absolute favorite is the revisited trofie pasta – this specialty from Liguria usually served with pesto is rarely found outside of Italy, making it a rare / connoisseur pasta. Homemade, the trofie are cooked al dente and come with an ideal pairing of generous clams with herby flavour, crispy duck chorizo and light almond paste. The portion is sized to perfection – enough to satisfy tastebuds and appetite, yet not to generous to induce sleep.

This month menu also bears a hearty pizza with capsicums and prawns and a sumptuously cooked salmon with crispy shallots, balanced by a fresh spinach puree reduced in sour cream, to make it fresh while overwhelming with taste.

To finish on a sweet note, the moist almond torta with delicious cherry fillings comes with its lighter than air wiped cream and pairs perfectly with a strong flavoured expresso.
