Porking good @ S.Wine
A vast drawing of a pork’s cuts on the back wall trumpets the chef’s intentions at S.Wine; passionate gutsy nose-to-tail cuisine. This pig-centric deli cafe tucked in the belly of the finest grocery shop in town, Ben Independent Grocer, serves all manners of cuts from neck to tail, using only premium pieces imported from Spain, Italy and US.
The cute little piggies at the entrance playfully lead to the polished interior with room for 85 guests, where wooden tables and metallic seatings infuse a trendy and modern feel to this urban venue. The elegant low hanging lamps dramatically lighten the superbly prepared and presented dishes, while adding intimacy to the place.
Recently revisited, the exciting new menu takes the east meets west concept to a whole new level. Being a salad-obsessive, I was seduced at the first bite into the signature dish, a tantalizing salad mixing warm pork confit, crispy watermelon and lychees with fragrant asian greens. Taking a classic and adding a brightening sensation to it using high quality ingredients result in an outstanding dish, perfect for sharing thanks to a generous serving.
Another not-to-be-missed dish is the delicate and melt-in-the-mouth pork neck Thai style. Premium neck cuts are marinated for 24h in a honey, garlic and lemongrass puree for an out of this world result, satisfying the wildest porcine cravings. The mouth watering italian roast wrapped in fennel, slowly cooked to achieve a slightly moist texture, complemented by a red wine sauce and a savoury potato gratin will make you weak at the knees. A grand finale to this decadent meal is the smooth and round on the palate Strawberry sundae with macadamia nuts and bacon bits.
Ribs to share, parma ham, al dente pasta with hearty bolognese sauce and chorizo chunks – name your pork envy, it is certainly on the sensible and seductive menu of S.Wine, using only the best ingredients and cooked with passion.
Open everyday, S.Wine welcomes locals and foreigners alike in a laid back yet chic atmosphere where pigging out is taking seriously. Bring your wine from Booze, the wine shop next door, and enjoy it – no uncorking fees charged.
S.Wine is definitely a corker – or is it a porker?
