French Magic @ Indiana Kenanga
A stone throw from Bali, but much more authentic than its famous sister, the island of Nusa Lembongan is a well kept secret. Surfers, yogis, and families looking for a quiet retreat far from the busy Bali come here… and find enchantment.
I enjoyed staying on the best beach of the island, Jungutbatu, since it has everything I was looking for: nice waves (the amazing shipwreck), typical local huts to sleep in, a small town, a yogi center… and a very relaxed atmosphere, no place for showing off here, thank you! In this laid back ambiance I was thus very intrigued by the Indiana Kenanga resort and restaurant, with its modern design, huge buddhas and overall elegance, from the swimming pool till the restaurant overviewing the sea. And I discovered with great pleasure that a talented french chef, Clement Fouqueré, ex chef at the amazingly chic and 3 Michelin stars restaurant Le Bristol (run by chef Eric Fréchon) Paris, was operating here.
I have been trying from breakfast till dinner most of their dishes, and can assure you that the whole menu is a masterpiece, with only the best and freshest of ingredients, worked with style. You can feel the audacity, creativity and french influence on the menu, while taking advantage of the local products. For instance on the dinner menu an incredible Foie poelé is served, on a bed of local apples in compotée along with some japanese crispy apples. I could never have imagined eating such a wonderfully mastered foie gras in Indonesia and actually found it heaven.
The lunch menu has different options, elaborated snacks, burgers and salads – the crispy flavory mango/pineapple/shrimps & coriander salad was my favorite, since it is light while being perfectly balanced and incredibly rich in mouth. Don’t miss the waffle with chocolate as a final treat – the perfect texture, light enough to appreciate the full waffle, will stay in your memory forever.
The wine menu has some very honorable french wines at a reasonable price, and also some australian or chilean wine.
Should you want to indulge, staying in one of the superb 40sqm villa with private garden is idyllic and worth the expense.
Don’t forget to book for your dinner ) it tends to get very crowded.
